Tooth Extractions
Why might I need a tooth pulled?
Permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but for many reasons, this doesn't always happen. For instance, you might need to have a tooth extracted because it's too diseased to keep. Decay, trauma, and lifestyle can all contribute to needing teeth pulled.
Extractions may be necessary for other reasons, including:
- Risk of infection from a failed root canal
- Risk of infection during chemotherapy or an organ transplant
- Severe gum (periodontal) disease
- Crowded or extra teeth
- No room for third molars (wisdom teeth)

How are extractions performed?
There are two types of extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible in your mouth. During this type of procedure, an experienced dentist at Sunny Smile Dentistry loosens your tooth with a small instrument and lifts it out with dental forceps.
A surgical extraction is a bit more complicated. The tooth may have been broken off at your gum line, or it hasn’t yet come through the surface of your gums, as is typical with wisdom teeth. In these cases, the dentist makes a small incision in your gum to remove the tooth.
Sometimes the tooth needs to be sectioned, or cut into smaller pieces, to be removed. It may also be necessary to remove some of the bone around the affected tooth.
You'll receive a local anesthetic before a simple extraction or surgical extraction so you will not feel any pain. If you’re having several teeth extracted at once, as is the norm with wisdom teeth removal, your dentist may give you a general anesthetic so you don’t feel pain and you sleep through the entire procedure.
How long does it take to heal from a tooth extraction?
Based on how many teeth you had taken out and your individual condition, healing usually takes one or two weeks. New bone and gum tissue will slowly replace the areas where your teeth were removed. As your healing progresses, you might feel discomfort and soreness or have problems chewing, depending on the extent of your dental surgery.
